July 10 is National Piña Colada Day, and that’s exciting! The Piña Colada, is one of the most popular cocktails in the world. It’s creamy, juicy, coconutty and sometimes boozy. There’s no doubt this is a classic amongst classics, and the more you know about the Piña Colada, the more you enjoy it!
Piña Colada History
Let’s start with, who invented the Piña Colada? This is Puerto Rico’s signature drink, so it’s only natural a Puerto Rican bartender is credited for creating such a fantastic cocktail. Most experts agree that Ramón “Monchito” Marrero created the Piña Colada in 1954 while working at the Caribe Hilton Hotel. Of course, there are other versions of the cocktail’s origin.
The Piña Colada became known worldwide after British American singer Rupert Holmes released his 1979 song “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).” Yes, we know you’re playing it in your head right now.

What is a Piña Colada?
The Piña Colada makes the most out of the sweet-scented Caribbean rum. In fact, the official recipe for the drink calls for rum, coconut cream and fresh pineapple juice (juice from actual pineapple – no canned or bottle juice)– all blended with ice until frothy. Sounds like a smoothie right?
Why the name? Piña Colada means strained pineapple, and it’s because natural pineapple juice is quite fibrous and chunky, so you must strain it to get that clear, tropical juice. The name stuck.
How to drink a Piña Colada? That’s easy. This is a wonderful cocktail for warm summer days, and it’s best served in a tall glass, garnished with a cherry and sipped with a straw. A side of tostones or fried plantains is a great side dish for the Caribbean cocktail, and they’ll make you feel in Puerto Rico!
