Beyond the Recipe: What I’ve Learned as a Culinary Instructor
Memorable Teaching Moments
One of my most cherished memories as a culinary instructor involves teaching children in the South Bronx how to make a dinosaur kale salad with strawberries. The sight of their tiny hands, clad in gloves, stripping the leaves off the stems while roaring like dinosaurs was both fun and educational. This joyful chaos perfectly encapsulated the spirit of my classes: making learning enjoyable and interactive.
In another session, I remember slicing watermelons with a group of eager young students, their eyes wide with curiosity and excitement. These moments are not just about teaching a recipe; they’re about fostering a love for food and cooking in a new generation. The genuine smiles and laughter of the children are the rewards that keep me passionate about my work.
Impactful Student Stories
Our mission is to teach cultural appreciation through food and music. Over the years, I’ve witnessed countless students discover a newfound appreciation for different cultures through our classes. One memorable instance was when a student, previously hesitant about trying new foods, enthusiastically embraced the flavors of a traditional Puerto Rican dish. Experiences like these broaden their culinary horizons and deepen their understanding of cultural diversity.
I often share stories of my own culinary journey, like the summer days spent in Puerto Rico with my grandma (abuelita). These personal anecdotes help my students connect more deeply with the dishes we prepare, fostering a sense of cultural appreciation and understanding.
Teaching isn’t just about sharing recipes; it’s about inspiring creativity, building confidence, and connecting people through the universal language of food.

Key Lessons in Teaching
One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of innovation and fun in teaching. Telling stories, sharing tips, and creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable trying new things are crucial. Even seemingly silly tips, like roaring like dinosaurs while preparing kale, can become memorable moments that make learning enjoyable and impactful.
My approach focuses on breaking the ice and ensuring no one feels out of place or inadequate. I encourage everyone to give it a try, fostering a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. This approach has proven effective in making students feel welcome and confident in their abilities, enhancing their overall learning experience.
Innovative Teaching Techniques
Over my 16+ years of teaching, I’ve developed several innovative techniques to engage my students. For example, incorporating playful elements into the lessons, like the dinosaur roars, helps to make the learning process fun and memorable. These techniques are particularly effective with younger students, helping them to relax and enjoy the experience.
Another technique involves hands-on, interactive sessions where students actively participate in the cooking process. This approach not only enhances their learning but also builds their confidence in the kitchen. By making the classes dynamic and engaging, I ensure that each student leaves with a sense of accomplishment and a deeper appreciation for culinary arts.
By focusing on creating memorable, culturally rich experiences, I guide my students through their own culinary hero’s journey. Together, we navigate the challenges and celebrate the triumphs, creating a community of passionate, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic cooks.
I can't help but pick Rioja wines for my paella. They make my Mediterranean dining experience top-notch! Plus, they're perfect for crafting a killer pomegranate sangría!
