Chile’s History and Tradition
People have inhabited Chile for at least 10,000 years. The Incas and then the Mapuches, along with other native cultures, thrived in the country’s blessed mountains, valleys and endless seashores until the arrival of the Spaniard conquerors.
Explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Chile in 1520. By 1541, the Spanish conquerors had already established the country’s capital city, Santiago. After a dark colonial period, Chile gained independence in 1810, although the dust settled well into the 19th century after internal struggle and civil war.
