Explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Chile in 1520. By 1541, the Spanish conquerors had already established the country’s capital city, Santiago. After a dark colonial period, Chile gained independence in 1810, although the dust settled well into the 19th century after internal struggle and civil war.
